What are the best ways for Ed-Visa holders in Thailand to manage ATM fees and withdrawal limits?

How can I avoid paying 220bhat ATM fees and 20k withdrawals limit, as a language Ed-visa holder? That’s such a pain in the ass.

Is there any local app that verifies me with my type of visa so i can transfer everything there from my visa card to avoid charges? Or i donno, any other workaround?

EDIT: Please Stop telling me open a bank account. I WAS NOT ABLE even after asking my school agent, yes that's quite stupid that they don't allow a non-tourist person like me open an account in Thailand.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on ways to avoid the 220 baht ATM withdrawal fee and the 20,000 baht withdrawal limit faced by language Ed-Visa holders in Thailand. Many users suggest opening a Thai bank account, which should, in theory, be accessible, but several commenters report difficulties with recent regulatory changes making it harder for foreigners to open bank accounts. Alternatives proposed include using services like Wise for transfers, cash withdrawals from bank branches, or exploring local digital wallets. Some suggest using banks that refund ATM fees or using an international bank, like Charles Schwab, that reimburses ATM charges. Various insights highlight frustration with banking accessibility and the cost of withdrawals in Thailand.

Just go to Sukhumvit branches !!!! Bangkok bank asked me just passport validation certificate from the embassy and i opened the account on covid extension, not even visa. However any other branch that is out of that area will reject you. Also once you change your passport you will be able to do so only from the branch you oppened the account , so get one that works until late because mine is until 16:30 haha
Maksym ***********
@М. ***
When there were COVID extensions it was much more simpler

@Maksym **********
For sure, but still i got rejected on all the non-Sukhumvit branches i went into. So it is worth it to try there with his visa...

Take your card and your passport to krungsri bank and go inside or if they have an exchange booth outside like the beginning of Jomtien and withdraw what you want with no charges. I used to take out between 80 and 100 thousand each time to keep me going before I had an account
David *******
@Stevie *******
yes correct. Only other thing to consider is if your bank back home or the card provider charges foreign currency fees! Find one with zero foreign transaction fees the rock up to Krungsri with card and passport. ATMs for foreign cards is only for LOW IQ tourist (scam victims) hahaha
Stevie ********
@David ******
I used to use the card I had specifically for foreign purchases with no transaction fees, but by the sounds of it he was already here and already using the card he was going to use so telling him that was of no use. So using the card regardless would still be better used doing it this way
Stan ********
All my money is in my brokerage account - they pay all transaction fees charged by ATM. Check out Fidelity Investments.

Take your debit card into a larger bank with your passport, they give you a higher rate and no fee

Yellow Bank Krungthai has a 30K baht limit for the same fee.

Some banks refund ATM fee

Which banks offer reimbursement?

Ally: Reimburses up to $10 per statement cycle for other ATMs in the U.S.

Axos Bank: Offers unlimited ATM fee reimbursements to qualifying customers

USAA: Reimburses up to $10 per statement cycle for non-USAA ATMs

TD Bank: Offers unlimited ATM fee reimbursements

When the fuss blows over get a Thai bank account and reduce your reliance on cash. I can go days in Thailand not using cash. In Australia it years since I used cash there. Digital all the way for convenience and less ATM charges!
John **********
It has gotten substantially harder to open a Thai account recently for foreigners; even existing accounts have come under increased scrutiny.

Not sure of your nationality, for US travelers Charles Schwab and one or two other institutions refund al ATM fees. If you are not a US citizen, there may be options in your Passport country that do the same but I am unfamiliar with them. Another inconvenient option is if you have a trusted friend or coworker with a Thai account who will withdraw cash on your behalf if you transfer it to them. However even Thai accounts have (lower) withdrawal charge unless you are taking the money out of that bank’s ATM, in the province that the account is held.

Crypto
Stephen *******
@Sacher ******
How does that get you THB?
Sacher *******
@Stephen ******
you can buy crypto USDT on licensed sites in back home.

There are (usually Russian-related) official exchanges all over Thailand that accept USDT.

And there's no practical cap on the amount.
Stephen *******
@Sacher ******
You didn't mention THB?
Sacher *******
@Stephen ******
well, the point of an exchange is that you give one currency and get another.

That is to say yes, the outcome of my suggested approach is getting many THB in cash.

20.000 Baht limit is easy.

On the page with suggested amounts choose “Other amount” (left bottom) then you can enter a amount up to your cards limit ( - 220 Baht ) if the machine has a lower limit than your card abort, and go to a ATM from another bank or at a other location.
David *********
You can only open an account with the Government Savings Bank , just opened mine last week , have ATM card and also just did 1st Wise transfer from Australia 🇦🇺 into new Thia account today.

I might try that. Send money to the credit card few hours before but I'm sure they reject positive balance. It must be zero or negative. I'll try anyway. on a Non-Imm-ED visa or extension, you are able to open a Thai bank account. You should prefer either SCB, Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn, as to these three banks you can use WISE to transfer up to 2 million THB in one swoop (SCB up to 1.5 mill). To all other banks, the limit with WISE is 49,999 THB for one transaction

My logic also says a person like me that is not a tourist must be able to open a bank account. But i wasn’t able to do so. My school agent attempted and i was told I got rejected. use an agent to open a bank account. Where are you located? In Pattaya visit F.S. Consulting Co. They will open a Bangkok Bank account for you within 2 days
Gary *******
You can get a wise debit card no fee at atm
Nongnuch ********
@Gary ******
that's not true, even on a WISE Debit card he needs to pay the 220.- Baht ATM fee inside Thailand. And if taking out more than 350 AUD per month out of a WISE card, WISE will take a provision! Not really a good idea
Gary *******
@Nongnuch *******
sorry I was told different.i have a card and will try it out when I come back to Thailand.
Nongnuch ********
@Gary ******
. . . . WISE card for AUS . . . and it says: "2 withdrawals to the value of AUD$350/month free. 1.75% of transaction amount + AUD$1.50 per transaction thereafter

Note: Third-party ATM service providers may charge their own fee" . . to me this means, the Thai bank which owns the ATM will always charge a flat 220.- Baht fee when you use a FOREIGN card
Nongnuch ********
The question concerns whether withdrawing from a THB Wise account with a Wise debit card incurs the standard 220 baht ATM fee. The consensus from users indicates that this fee is applicable for foreign cards, and there are also additional limitations on monthly withdrawal amounts. Additionally, using a local Thai bank account is recommended for minimizing fees and enhancing banking convenience.

As mentioned regarding a Thai bank account. I use Wise to transfer my currency (USD) into a THB jar.
