I want to stay in Thailand for around 30 days. Since I am traveling on standby tickets I guess I still need to apply for a regular 60 day tourist visa. Would I need to purchase insurance for the 60 day duration of the visa or for the length of the 30 day stay?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When planning to stay in Thailand for around 30 days on a standby ticket, it's important to note that you will require a confirmed flight ticket for entry. Additionally, even if you are staying for only 30 days, you are advised to obtain travel insurance covering the full duration of your tourist visa, which is typically 60 days.
a standy ticket is exactly that. a ticket. worked just fine for me in the past 30 years or so. My question was if there were any new regulations with Thailandpass etc that changed the rules. Sorry, if I was not clear in my question.

I don't believe you can fly on a standby ticket. It must be a confirmed ticket to Thailand. Check with your Thai Consulate / Embassy.
You will also need to show a confirmed ticket departing Thailand
