I have an METV issued in USA on August 15th... I want to go to Laos and then to Vietnam from there and then make my way back to Chiang Mai..... What do I need to know and do I need passport photos handy? Thanks!

Yes one passport photo for Laos and $35 visa fee in USD. For Vietnam you need to get a visa in advance, or approval for a visa on arrival, you can't just rock up. If 30 days is enough, there is an e-visa for $25 you can do online which is probably the easiest.
