**Any recommendations for opening a bank account in Bangkok?

**

Ideally in Sukhumvit, but I’m flexible.

I’m on a Workation DTV (remote employee).

Has anyone had experience with specific bank branches? What documents were required?

Thanks in advance!

🏦 Bank Update: Just saw this when I walked into Krungsri to have them activate my mobile banking app on my new phone. As of February 9, 2024, they no longer open accounts for these types of visas:

1. Tourist

2. Free Visa

3. DTV

4. ED (except 4 years at a University and International School).

I'm so lucky my landlord helped me open an account years ago. 🙏💳📃

Feedback Regarding Bank Policy for Foreigners

I am an expatriate working here in Thailand and receive my salary in another bank.

I opened an account with Krungsri Bank for personal use and have conducted a few transactions, sending and receiving money with my Thai friends.

Recently, I was informed by the bank that, as a foreigner, I am not allowed to receive money from sources other than my salary. This restriction has been quite surprising and inconvenient for me.

In comparison, I have previously worked in Singapore, where the banking system is much more accommodating and foreigner-friendly.

Unfortunately, this recent experience has made me feel that Thailand is becoming increasingly challenging for foreigners in terms of financial transactions.

I hope the bank will reconsider or clarify this policy to ensure a smoother experience for expatriates who contribute to the economy here.

So after asking all different banks and agents, only two banks are currently ok for DTV holders:

1.Bangkok Bank ( have to buy insurance, probably around 5k-10K)

2. Krungsri bank

Try both of these banks without agents countrywide. Outside of Bangkok tend to be easier. Yes you need to have residency certificate from immigration. Driving license also helpful.

Otherwise, pay agents. Worth it if it's 5-6K. Don't pay more than that. Good luck!

Hi Banking question for you knowledgeable folks

I have an account with Krungsri Bank which unfortunately limits transfers via Wise to 50k baht per transaction I’m in the US now so considering transferring a larger amount via IBAN (bank to bank) Am I still restricted on the amount and will I benefit in regards to fees? Thanks

Hi, Finally i am allowed to open a bank account, can you share how you chose which local bank to do that with? Tnx!

* Update* conclusions:

only 3 banks allow transfer of 50k BHT and above : (Bangkok, Siam and Kbank) so that makes others much less attractive for expats. Bangkok Bank is common choice maybe because you can have a foreign currency account there and it has branches outside Asia (LON&NY), but on the other hand it has the tendency to offer its customers to buy insurance (which I dislike).

(any mistakes- PM me)

THANK YOU ALL !!
