TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is concerned about renewing their Non-O retirement visa while their UK passport is set to expire shortly after the renewal date. Several commenters note that the extension is typically granted for a full year but may only be valid until the passport's expiry date, which could mean receiving a shorter extension. There's discussion on the importance of renewing the passport prior to the visa extension to avoid issues, along with personal experiences and current processing times for UK passport renewals.

Why are you just thinking of this now? You can renew a passport well in advance if you plan it. I had the same issue with mine. Renewed it 9 months before expiry and got the extension stamp transferred.

Previously my Retirement Visa was renewed for the full 12 months and then I took the New Passport to Immigration and they moved the Visa into the new Passport but this year they only renewed the Visa until the Passport expiry date. Whether they have changed the regulations or whether it is the usual case of 'depends on the Immigration Officer'?
In my case they renewed until Passport expiry date which was 7 months. And when I renewed passport they would renew/extend it for another one year. But if insurance is required as in case of OA visa than they renew until insurance validity period

Normaly I would get a new passport prior to renew the extention of stay. But knowing the long que waiting to get a new UK passport i guess its to late already.
they are stating that it's 11 weeks now to get a new passport (but most reports are that people are getting it in about 8 ๐ฎ) That's still cutting it too close I think
that's why I am making the trip back to Canada, as a commonwealth country we can renew online with about a week turnaround versus all the paperwork and expectant wait here

Same thing happened to me a few years ago. You will only get an extension up to the expiry date in your passport
and when the passport is renewed, will you get the remainder stamped into your new passport?

I figured that you wouldn't, as it IS the responsibility of the individual to make sure they have enough time left on a passport. I ask only because I heard a story a few years ago of someone who was in this situation. He "claimed" that he would be receiving the remainder of his extension stamped into his new passport when it arrived.
a few years back when you got an extension shorter than a year because of your passport expiring you COULD go back with the new passport and get the rest of the year inked in.
NOW you cannot and you get an extension good until your passport runs out then you get the new one and go apply for another year's extension when the one runs out.
