they are not bending any rules but i'm sure that a situation like this would not always end this way if he was from a *non-white nationality country*, in a less friendly immigration office and if he was coming across as arrogant.

This is why I always tell people that most situation in Thailand can be resolve if u have a solid game plan. Knowing the rules and how, when and where they are less or more likely to try to help u using rules in ur advantage vs against u.

Ur experience also similar to mine, the 30 days extension will be deduct from ur current overstay (in ur case u could not have the 7 days extension as 7 - 30 = -23 days, lol!). If u overstay by let's say 10 days and u want a 30 days extension, ur extension will be only for 20 days even tho u paid the 10 days overstay. I actually think it's a good law, the monetary consequence is not enough for someone rich enough to not care about paying fees. They also have exception if u have a note from doctor that u could not make it to immigration due to accident or wtv u will not pay an overstay. The system is not perfect but not bad either.

really glad it worked out that way. Now you don't have a gun to your head to run to Savannakhet to get the new Non-O right away and can plan it out AND when you do travel to do it you're totally legal.

So immigration does take individual situations into account.

Just so you know, once you get your new Non-O you can get that 60 day visit thai family extension on ANY of the 90 day entries during the year. There's no problem getting it.

Ahh, what a cunning idea they had. (y) Sell you the 60 day visit family extension and let the 30 days you overstayed be burned up in that extension so you really got only 30 more days :O
