I’m planning to apply for the DTV in Germany but I’m no longer registered there. I’ve been living in Thailand with an ED visa. What can I provide as proof of residence in this case?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the necessary proof of residence to apply for a DTV in Germany while currently living in Thailand on an ED visa. Respondents suggest that having a residence in Germany is mandatory for applying there, and alternative recommendations include applying from a nearby country like Laos. A copy of the German passport may suffice as proof of nationality.
You apply in the country you are at except you can't apply inside Thailand. I reccomend Laos

You don’t have a passport?

Why would you apply in Germany if you aren't there? You must physically be in the country whose embassy you are applying to. No need to apply only to the embassy you are a national of. Go to one of the nearby countries from Thailand and apply from there.
no it’s not fine, you need to prove your address in Germany, in my case I applied in Canada, I could not have done that if I did not have a Canadian address and proof of that address, a passport loan would not cut it
That might be correct in other countries but in Germany you must have residency. If you don't have it you can't apply at any Thai Embassy or Consulate in Germany.
A passport in Germany is not a proof of residency, because there is no address in it. I know that you can have your complete address in your passport in your country. As a proof of residency we use the ID-Card... or the Passport together with a "certificate of residency". Since he doesn't have a valid residency in Germany he can't apply for this certificate.

No chance, if you are German. You must have a residence in Germany if you want to apply in Germany. Why don't you apply here somewhere? Laos or Jakarta for example.
