Planning to move to Thailand on the DTV in August as a remote worker, initially thinking of 2 years. I will be bringing my dog with me so lots of boxes to tick but my daughter is already living and working as an EYFS teacher. I am confused about the 180 day extension… will I need to leave and if so for how long? Or if I renew, will I need to re evidence the savings? I ask as within that time I will need to pay off my mortgage so may not have the funds.

Moving back to the UK with a dog isn’t easy so want to be as sure as I can that I won’t need to leave in a hurry.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation revolves around visa extension rules for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand. It clarifies that after an initial 180-day stay, you can extend your visa for another 180 days. However, once that extension expires, you must leave Thailand and re-enter to receive a new 180-day stamp. Participants share experiences and advice, confirming that re-entry can be as simple as leaving for a short period, like a bus or boat ride. Additionally, it's noted that reapplying for an extension requires paperwork and demonstrating financial stability, which could be challenging if funds are tight. Planning for dog transport and re-entry is also emphasized.

Every entry grants you 180 days max stay, with 1 opportunity to extend that stay. By a further 180 days. Then you have to leave and can repeat the above.

Yes when extending a stay you will need docs and likely have to show savings, as already confirmed. So it's easier to just leave and fly straight back in to get a new 180 days.

If you have a dog then make sure you have a back up plan incase anything happens reentering

Extension requirements at Bangkok - they look similar for other offices.

Just fly out and back. Very straightforward, nothing to prepare in advance, just make sure you have the eVisa printed out for your return journey.

Get a dog sitter, have a day trip, get another 180 day stamp when you come back.

Well that’s an overwhelming vote to leave. I will make sure I have plans in place to exit and re enter. Thank you for your advice.

In theory is better if you "leave", which can be as easy as hoping on a short bus or boat ride and then enter again.

Essentially you can leave for an hour and return, so as I understand it many people just do what’s known as bouncing, literally out 5’minutes and come back. It’s easier to do with a company as you don’t have to deal with anything.

If you do the extension then it looks like submitting the paperwork all over again to get approved but every different immigration office will be slightly different. As they essentially make up their own rules based on interpretation of what they are told.

You can extend ONLY once on each after that extension expires you MUST leave Thailand and re enter. The paperwork for the extension is huge .
