TLDR : Answer Summary
Contrary to the initial belief, travelers from the UK and other eligible countries entering Thailand overland can receive a 60-day visa exemption upon arrival, not just 30 days. This rule applies whether entering by land, sea, or air, as long as the traveler meets the necessary criteria.
He worked for British rail, safe to assume he has a British passport.

Depends on what passport you have. Most are 60 days atm.

NOPE...if you are eligible for Visa Exempt Entry, as you appear to be from the UK, you will be stamped in for 60 days on arrival into Thailand by land, sea or air.
