TLDR : Answer Summary
Many expats discuss the DIY approach to managing their O visa marriage applications, arguing that it is straightforward and cost-effective compared to hiring a lawyer. The process involves obtaining an updated list of requirements directly from the immigration office and assembling the necessary documents, which several users affirm can typically be handled without professional help. They emphasize the importance of personal involvement during the application process to avoid unnecessary complications, such as those arising from relying on external agencies. Key points involve ensuring you have the correct documents, the necessity of attending immigration in person, and having a trusted person accompany you to help navigate the requirements.
There are translation services in Bangkok and in every major city that can do that. Depends on where you will be living.

I came here on 90 day exempt visa in 2022. Took fiancee to about 15 bank branches over 2 days. Different branches of the same bank had different requirements to open account, including Bangkok bank wanting a copy of a work permit despite me telling them I was soon to be changing to a retirement Non O visa. You will have to spend time, and legwork, going to as many as you can in your area, eventually you will get one opened. As MANY previous posts have commented in the near 2 years I've been here, IF the agent messes up it is not them in trouble. You could get banned because of their mistakes! As others said here, take a Thai speaker with you to immigration and ask for an up-to-date list. My experience is they are extremely helpful. Good luck, I hope it works out OK
you are 100% correct Chris they kinda do there own thinking. Pattaya will be my best option as many falang abd did let me open an acct years ago. Now i will go branch to branch.

IMO, the VIP visa service agencies are worth the price. Google the visa agencies in your area. Look for ones with 4 or 5 stars. Then look for reviews of them on Youtube. Then visit their shop to see if they are professional and communicate well.

Hopefully you was married in Thailand with a Thai Marriage certificate or you will have extra steps to do.
"why not just pay a fee to the lawyer and have them do it"... because if they falter and don't do it, you are still wholly responsible, not them. Someone posted about a day or two ago about a very similar situation. Promises were broken, goods were not delivered. Now she is in overstay and needs to blow town PDQ.

So with that making sense, a few days after i land i would go to an office and ask for a list, i only have 30 days to do. How do you open a bank account. I tried kadr time but they wanted my visa, i said i need bank account to open it
well that’s the best info I can give you unless you explain fully your full situation, what you have done so far. Start a new post stating where you are and what visa you are on at the moment if any. Hope that helps
i did, moving jan 9th to thailand, on a passport 30 day entry. Married to thai lady 13 years and i am going to apply for a o visa marriage. What are my first steps to take after getting there. This site really has some great experienced people. I am new to the visa process as i been to thailand 22 times for 1 month stays so never went through this part till now.

Just to clarify: Visas wether based on retirement, marriage or any other reason are actually
stated as an extension of stay from one year to another, provided of course the applicant meets all the requirements.
As Brandon confirmed it is Immigration who ultimately issue these Extensions, so time and money could be wasted by going to anywhere else other than an Immigration Office
These comments are based on my personal experiences of over 20 years in Thailand, during which time I have never used any external
. Step 1 s go to your local immigration office and ask for the list of requirements for the extension.
Step 2 is read it and check you have everything they want.
If you are still unsure , ask or pay someone to help you understand it and complete the list correctly. A lawyer or agent is going to ask you for all of this paperwork anyway and you still need to appear at immigration in person anyway when you apply, including your wife if it's a spouse extension. Why pay them a month's thai salary to do one days work?
i wish someone could help out the first time and do it with me and give them a small donation for the teaching. And in the future i could do the same to another. I will be living in our home in Soeng Sang near korat if anybody is open to help through the proccess. We can chat
the process is very straightforward. Immigration is not some evil bad guy to avoid at all cost. They are very helpful, and actually have a list of documents you need to provide. They are not difficult to get at all. Just remember to always take your wife with to immigration with anything concerning your visa extension. As long as you keep copies of everything, the only thing you have to update in the following years is your bank letters, and your pictures, unless you move, everything else is the same. Lawyers and agents can't help you with these at all. Go to your local immigration and get the list of requirements. The only thing that can be critical is that your bank letters can not be more than 7 days old, and they count the day they were written as the first day.

It's only an issue if you don't meet the requirements that immigration request. Lawyers and agents are mainly used to circumvent this if you don't meet them . Otherwise you are paying a ridiculous amount of money for something you can do yourself.
Becasue its really not that hard if you have the correct documents. Sometimes those requirements do change, but not nearly as much as some claim. If you get an updated list prior to going its no problem even if they did.
If you use a lawyer you still have to get the documents together, they end up a post box.

Why waste money on an agent when you can do it yourself for 2000 baht? Plus you trust handing your passport over to some stranger for an unknown amount of time?
Just go to the immigration office before you'll apply and get the list of requirements. Then you know exactly what you need. It's not rocket science.
arguments for both sides- we were given conflicting information from multiple amphoe. Told it had to be done in other locations. Told explicitly they could not do it at this office. After travelling halfway around the north they now SAY they will do it, but the appointment is next month and my confidence is low. All of that feeds the agent theory- but when we were in Chiang Khong they had a big stack of applications that were being ignored and the kid said many of them had come from agents. So those people paid a chunk of money and were still getting blocked.
I was told.that immigration didn't want to do all the paperwork...easier to do retirement. I argued for two years ...then they paid me a home visit ...asked me to pay for the diesel to do the home visit.
