TLDR : Answer Summary
To travel to Laos with your car from Thailand, you need a valid passport for the car and car insurance. A Thai driving license is sufficient, and you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP). The travel can take around 18 hours one way, as experienced by others.

older vehicle i think over 5years old are checked but newer not. Itp is pink book and under 300 and renewals annually if needed cheaper. My insurance was only 7 days but second time they gave 14 day. Remember put stickers to windows.
