What are my options after my education visa expired while I was unaware and how can I address the overstay fines?

Hi.

My education visa expired with my passport on May 7th. I was not aware of this and arrived at immigration today to transfer my visa to my new passport and so my 90 day check in only to find out that my visa had expired. I visited cmu and they recommended I get an amnesty visa, gave me the form stating my education visa had been canceled and told me to go to the American consulate to get a letter in order to get said amnesty visa. What a mess. I can still go to class though! (Eye roll)

I'm going with flow here, but I'm wondering if I even need to go to the consulate at all.

Any other advice on what visa I could get asap would be much appreciated. My currently visa has expired and I'm assuming I'm incurring the 500 baht a day fine at this point. Happy Monday!

the reason I ask is; believe me you're not the first person to let an extension run out but still be enrolled/studying. Usually the school gives the documents to apply for a new extension based on education, the immigration office charges you the overstay and issues the new extension

Just curious why the school isn't giving you paperwork stating you're still studying so you could pay the overstay fine and apply for a new extension based on education? Is your term over with them or what?

The US consulate doesn't issue the letter and hasn't since last Oct or so.

There is no "amnesty visa" so let's get the terminology right for you. You want a 60 day extension because of covid.

You take paperwork from your school stating you stopped studying on xxx date, the immigration office will cancel your current extension (even though you let your stamp run out it wasn't cancelled officially) you will pay 500 baht a day for every day from the date your stamp ran out until you apply for the covid extension.

If you already have the paperwork from the uni, I'd just go back to the immigration office today and apply for the covid extension. Today is the 17th day since your extension expired so you would own 8500baht overstay and pay the new 1900baht covid extension fee.
