In the past I have used this Visa to stay here in Thailand
And just before it expires I would take a trip outside of the country and when I landed back in Thailand just days before it expired immigration at the airport would stamp it for a full another year
Does anyone know if this is still happening?
I also understand the new regulations of having health insurance in place and that the Visa will only be extended for the length of the insurance policy
Which I plan to do
Does anyone know of this policy still working the same way
Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
The OA visa in Thailand continues to function as it has in the past, with holders being able to re-enter the country just before their visa expires for an additional year, provided they have health insurance. It is crucial to note that while the first year allows multiple entries, the second year is single entry, necessitating a re-entry permit if you plan to leave the country during this period. Participants in the discussion confirmed that both the renewal process and health insurance requirement remain unaffected.

Yes it is still the same, a friend of mine just re entered Thailand, was stamped in for another year, and had the insurance in place for another year, but be aware the 2nd year is a single entry, if you are leaving Thailand in that 2nd year, you must purchase a re entry permit from immigration.

I've never quite understood the advantage of leaving/re-entering the country to get re-stamped on an O-A 50+? A new visa costs Bt1900, it would cost me more to leave/come back. What are the advantages?

Yes is the answer to both your questions.

Works the same way. The first year is multiple entry. Time your final entry just before it expires and youβll be stamped in for a full year provided your insurance is in place. This second year is not multiple entry so youβd need a re entry permit if you leave to keep the stay until date alive.

The OA visa still works like it always has. You'll be stamped in for a year every time you enter Thailand until the end date of the visa, or as long as your insurance is valid for if not for a year.
