TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation explores the challenges of using Thai QR codes for payments while on a Digital Tourist Visa (DTV) in Thailand. It is generally required to have a Thai bank account to utilize QR payments effectively. Some commenters suggest alternatives like using a foreign card with apps like Line Pay and Moreta Pay, while others emphasize using cash due to the difficulty in obtaining a bank account with a DTV. There’s ongoing debate about the nature of the DTV and its acceptance by banks, with some claiming that current rules are restrictive, making it hard for DTV holders to open accounts.
dude its not a myth. do you have a dtv and opened an account or are you just talking bs? i tried probably 10 bank branches already and they all declined opening an account on the DTV… and everyone says its a special tourist visa. everyone. officials, bank head-offs, etc… its just you who is delusional and misinformed.
i usualy go with my thai girlfriend. no you cannot open a bank account on a tourist visa anymore. like i told you, things have changed this year. inform yourself before spreading misinformation. you would need bribes and a sketchy way to do this right now.
can you be more condescending? There are countless people who tried multiple banks just in this group alone. How about you stop talking about things you don’t know nothing about?
It is up to the bank if they give you an account or not. Just try next bank.
There are forums about opening bank accounts. Perhaps ask there?
DTV is not a tourist visa, it is a DTV. And on a tourist visa you easy get a bank account.
You get a bank account on visa exempt.
The guy who knows nothing is you.
Opening a bank account is a business transaction. Perhaps go into the bank with proper clothing, proper shoes a smile and say "Sawasdee Khrap" as greeting?
Otherwise bite the bullet and ask an agent. Wow, an agent can make a bank account on a DTV? So? Obviously the kind of visa is not the problem ...
you are wrong again. thailand made it a lot more restricted this year. things have changed. opening a bank account is a lot harder now and doesnt work in most cases. thats the bitter reality now. ;) believe it or not. using an agent is sketchy and could cause in closure of your account at any point where thai authorities will initiate the next crack down. same as they did with house/land owners this/last year
yes it us a DTV visa, that does NOT belong to the category long term visa that are meant to live in Thailand, that is why most banks do not accept it to open an account, but you can live in your own myth of course.

If you don’t have a thai bank account, you can try getting this travel visa debit card from kasikorn. I didn’t try yet but as far as i know it’s available in exchange booths including Suvarnabhumi airport. You then link the card to an app that allows you to scan the code:
Some of you people spend so much time and stress about paying by qr code or other non cash ways for what reason I will never understand when just using cash works everywhere. Here is my favourite photo. Edit add: I have never ever paid for anything in 34 years by qr code
in 34 years I have never found one however just the other day I was sitting in a restaurant and clearly heard the Thai owner deny access for clients who wanted to pay by qr code. He said "cash only". Seriously, I pay by cash in the malls too. I also pay Bolt by cash. Anyone who wants to attach a credit card to a 3rd party company is opening themselves up to hacking and fraud. Not for me.
the one in terminal21 still does, probably because asoke receives a lot of foreigners. anyway, if they don't want cash, i'm always happy to spend it somewhere else
that is true, but I never heard of Thai not accepting cash.

Apparently the app Moreta pay, you can use for Thai qr code with a foreign card and they take 3% i think. I have not used it yet, can someone report back if it works?
it works great. However, for now they can only use QR codes from registered business accounts. Most street vendors use their personal bank account and these codes don’t work for now. But they’re working on it.
aaw thanks for the feedback. I dont like that Moreta ask for my bank account details. I rather hook them up with my Debit card. So it deducts automatically from your bank account when u pay via QR code or you have to send money first to the wallet?
you have to send money first. But you don’t have to give your bank details. You can do a manual transfer but that actually takes 2-4 days at the moment
They have instant top up but only if you connect your bank/wise account
you can authenticate your line with passport and then access all options. You can to do it at bts station as far as I know with rabbit card that’s what I did 3 years ago
works for me. Do you have the tab "wallet" in your line app?

It's a feature of all Thai bank accounts. Launch the bank's app, click the scan to pay function, and it instantly fills in the recipient bank info to do an instant transfer from your Thai bank account to theirs.

It is very difficult to open a Thai bank account with a dtv visa.
The banks say it is a tourist visa and people on tourist visas can’t open bank accounts.
I was told by banks that the only way they can open one for me is if I own property, or am shareholder in a company 😬
Thai banks don't know what a DTV is nor are they able to "classify" it. Unfortunately, it's difficult to open a bank account regardless of what visa you have unless it's a non-O or non-B and accompanied by either a work permit or work permit application.
Retirement visa holders can find it difficult to open bank accounts too, because they don't hold a work permit.
You'll need to visit a head office branch and/or use an agent.
I went into multiple banks about 2 months ago ago and all told me the same thing… I needed to have a visa that was 1+ years or they wouldn’t be able to do it
A DTV is valid for 5 years. Extensions of stay are mostly for 1 year only, very rarely longer than this. Most non-O and non-B holders receive only a 1 year extension and by the time they receive the full extension, they'll only have 11 months left.
Not surprised they love making things difficult… wouldn’t let me have one because they changed the law 1 week before I went to the bank… so I now share my bank account with my Thai girlfriend and problem solved aha
not possible under 50yo for visa exempt as of this month

Anonymous participant 804 Each bank and each branch has their own policy. Your branch may have told you that, but another branch will still interpret things in their own way. There is no policy that applies nationwide to all banks.
You can even use your credit or debit card to pay for the subway in Bangkok. Not sure about the BTS - possibly as well (needs to be double checked, as I haven't used the system in years, so I'm not sure).
