first time visitor and wanted to know the procedure before i got there, do I need visa on arrival, I'm a US citizen...

You do not qualify for visa on arrival, which is where you apply for and pay for a 15 day visa at the airport.

US citizens qualify for visa exempt, which is a free 60 day stamp at the airport. It is not a visa, just an entry stamp.

No US Passport holders get a 60-day Visa Exempt entry. Make sure you have a flight out of Thailand within 60-days

i hadnt either until a mate booked a Qantas flight from Australia. He rang me panicking. I gave him my onward flight sut he booked for Aussie $16. 10 minutes later he checked in with the email. He was on a bus from Chiang mai to Laos.

I have since seen references to this on the visa site

Well... never heard about that... and I don't think that they have the right to define the kind of onward travel, not really their business. But I agree... a flight ticket is clearly the "safe side".

air travel only according to most airlines. They will ask for proof of onward air travel. Its been reported in other posts by the moderators that other forms maybe rejected
