This maybe a stupid question but I live in Chiang Mai and I am currently in Hua hin on vacation. On my return to Chiang Mai do I have to update my TM 30 to show I am back in Chiang Mai? Or is it only necessary to do this when I leave the country? TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
When returning to Chiang Mai from a vacation in Hua Hin, you do not need to update your TM 30 unless you have arrived back from an international trip. The TM 30 update is required only when your international arrival card (TM 6) changes, which occurs when you enter Thailand from abroad.
Okay, we can all at least agree on one thing. Different immigration offices do the TM.30 differently.
I can say with 100% confidence that in Chiang Mai you ONLY go get a TM.30 recepit updated IF you have come back IN to the country. You do not need to do it if you come back from travel inside the country
This is what they do when you update your TM.30 receipt in Chiang Mai

It really sucks every immigration office makes up their own rules, or interprets the laws so differently. It would be so much better if the chief of the immigration division dictated to all the offices how the law should be interpreted and applied and every foreigner in the country has the same burden as every other. It should not be this game of immigration office roulette where some people get relatively lucky (such as in Bangkok) and others get screwed (such as in Samut Phrakan and Phuket).

in Chiang Mai 100% it's ONLY when you come back from overseas because that's the only time your arrival date into the country and your TM.6 arrival/departure card changes.
