How critical it is to cancel student visa before applying soft power? I plan to apply in Hanoi a month before my student visa finishes.
Please share if you were approved / denied in this situation ππ«°
Also please share how you cancelled the visa if you did - my school is not sure how to do it π€·ββοΈ

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the necessity of canceling their student visa prior to applying for a soft power visa in Thailand and seeks to understand the experiences of others in similar situations. Comments indicate that some have not canceled their student visas before applying, as they were automatically canceled upon exiting the country. One user shared their approval experience while applying from Yangon, Myanmar.
it depends if you were on an actual visa or on an extension of stay. If you were on an extension of stay you need to visit immigration with documentation from your school to cancel. If you were on an actual visa without a re-entry permit it is automatically cancelled when you leave. Check your passport.
Hi John thank you. Im not sure I understand. My visa (stamp on my passpost) is until beginning of March, I will go to the embassy by the beginning of Feb. I recently did 90days report. what should I check on my passport? π

Anonymous participant look at what it actually says on the stamp in your passport. Does it say something like "extension of stay is permitted...". If so you are on an extension of stay, it's unlikely you would do 90 day reports on a 90 day visa as it doesn't allow you to stay long enough

Anonymous participant that's you getting stamped back into the country on a re-entry permit until 6th March next year. What stamp allows you to stay until then?
Not this one? it specifically state this date. There is the initial ED stamp, it has the same date of validity, do you mean that one?
Curious, why is this important
John **********
Anonymous participant but the date is based on either a visa or an extension of stay. If you you were on an actual visa I'd be surprised you got the DTV so what is the next previous stamp?
Anonymous participant ok, that is NOT a visa. It IS an extension of stay. Which means you should be OK to go and apply for the DTV, even with a re-entry permit, but will need to cancel the extension when you return to Thailand at the office that gave you the extension, Buriram by the looks of things. I take it you study at a university there?
I wonder whats the logic in cancelling an expired extension of stay
John **********
Anonymous participant its not expired, it's valid until March next year. But that aside when you get an extension like this you sign a bit of paper that says you will inform them if your circumstances change so you need to honour that
But if its not valid anymore (I hope to receive the dtv mid February) - then, why its needed to advise them of changes in circumstances..
maybe its one of those birocracy I dont understand π
Do you have a source, where you get your info from? π
John **********
Anonymous participant the source is the document you sign at the immigration office when you get your extension which says you will inform them if your circumstances change.
If i understand your question, I am on an actual visa. On my initial visa stamp 12 months ago, extension of stay permitted until.. since then did few times extensions also left and came back.

Anonymous participant I'm confused. Can you post a picture of your most recent stamp?
