Got my multiple entry tourist visa approved but it didn't say on the consulate advice that I needed proof of onward travel. Is this something that I should get? Also where is the best place to do a border run from Hat Yai?

From hat yai you can go south to the Satun land border. Or via Ko Lipe to langkawi or fly to anywhere in malaysia

If you have a visa proof of onward travel is not required. If the airline asks for this just show them you have a valid visa and not required. Happens to me every time I come back from the U.S. The airline asks me where my return ticket is, I show them the reentry permit (visa is same for this) and I am good to go

You could get asked at check in. We did on our 6 month METV. We are from the uk so return/onward travel was one of the requirements. I know this is not visa related but an interesting thing with our travel insurance too which I’m glad I read was that if you did not have a return flight booked you would not get repatriation to your home country.

 Nope, not at airhead immigration. Section 12 contains no mention of lack of proof of onward travel.

Immigration ("passport control") could potentially ask. But unless you have extensive thai entry-exit history, chances are slim.
