Leaving for USA in a week. :( coming back about a month later. I plan to leave via land border after that and don't want to buy an onward ticket if I can avoid it. Applying for a tourist visa online do you think it is possible to explain this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is preparing to travel to the USA and then return to Thailand, seeking advice on applying for a tourist visa without an onward ticket. Commenters suggest various strategies, including obtaining an onward travel ticket online, explaining travel intentions during the visa application, and considering the Multi-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) which allows for extended stays. They also mention options like buying a cheap bus ticket or a refundable ticket as potential solutions.
Best to buy some sort of cheap ticket that is changeable, cancellable, or you can eat the loss.

In the past a round trip ticket was sometimes cheaper. It makes zero sense, but check it.

Buy a cheap bus ticket it’s your airline that will ask

Just tell them you are leaving via land border. You can always buy an onward travel ticket at the airport and cancel it if you need to

In the US get the METV, multi-entry tourist visa. This gives you 6 months of 60 day entries into Thailand everytime you cross the border. You can also get a 30 extension everytime too, so if you time it right you can stay almost 9 months just crossing the border right before it expires, and returning, then the 30 day extension. You can simply get a bus ticket showing you're leaving if they ask. You can only get the METV in the US, if that is your passport country.

In Australia they have allowed an explanation as to why you intend to stay over the 60 days granted on a TR. This wasn't the case before covid. I was granted the visa simply stating my intention to 30 day extending and border runs. So yes I say so
I was referring to the application of the visa not facing customs arriving. I did get questioned and asked if I had my ticket to Cambodia but told the officer not as yet and he let me in and it's my 2nd 5 month stay in 12 months as I was here from November to April. I do believe I might be in trouble if I try this a 3rd time next year

Just get an onward travel ticket from one of the services online
I suppose tickets to neighbouring countries aren't that much- I just hate wasting the money. I confess at first my feelings were because I was thinking how much the tickets back to origin were...
