TLDR : Answer Summary
A user reported being denied a Tourist visa application in Laos due to not having a Thai bank account, despite having three months of statements from an Australian bank. Multiple comments indicated that a Thai bank account is not necessary for a Tourist visa, and it is sufficient to show proof of funds, such as cash or bank statements from a foreign account. Many users recommend contacting the Thai consulate directly for accurate information or visiting a different country for visa processing.
You have to apply for your 60 day tourist visa from your own country

You have to show proof of funds when applying in Sydney Australia for the TR60 as well but not a thai bank account.

You need 3 months of bank statements in Vientiane showing an average balance of 20k baht, but it can be baht equivalent in another country. You additionally should have 20k baht (or equivalent) cash when entering Thailand

No this is not true. I had an reply from the Thai Emb in laos and they accept any bank statement which can be in English.
I did twice once in Viettaine and also Savannakhe with my country bank.

You need to show cash not a bank account they are lying to you..
There are two different financial requirements required for doing a visa run to Vientiane. You are correct, that to enter Thailand by land border, or plane you could be asked to show 20,000 baht in cash or an equivalent amount in foreign currency, a bank statement or proof of the amount in a banking app is not accepted as financial proof.
To get a tourist visa at the Thai Embassy in Vientiane now, you need to print off 3 months of bank statements as part of the application paperwork. The bank statements need to show that you have maintained a minimum balance of 20,000 baht in your account for the last three months. Showing cash or a banking app balance is not accepted. I successfully obtained a tourist visa in Vientiane last month. I used my Thai bank account, however there were others there applying for tourist visas who were using their home country bank accounts
you don't need an account in Thailand, but it might help to have

baht cash. They asked me to show cash, I didn't have it with me, then they asked me to show my bank statement. I didn't have it either, so I got a stamp that I couldn't prove that I'm a tourist on my visa. But they still gave me the visa. It was 2020. You also don't need an agency for that.
no, you do not need a Thai bank account. Your home country account is OK. I did a tourist visa in Vientiane last month. You need to be able to print off 3 months worth of bank statements which show that you have maintained a minimum balance of money equivalent to 20,000 baht in your account for the last 3 months. You need to submit this proof as part of your application pack. So opening a Thailand account now wouldn't meet the requirements for a tourist visa at the Thai Embassy in Vientiane. This is why you use your home country bank to meet the requirement. Go on to the Vientiane Thai Embassy website it explains there what you need. It is easy to do yourself. You don't need an agent to help
if I were you I would call the embassy in Vientian and find out what you need

They are trying to con you. There was a story on a FB forum whereby a woman was refused entry at the Cambodian border, as she could not show 20,000 Bhat. They wanted to see the cash. No Thai bank account was required. This was an extreme case and was caused by her doing a 24 hour visa run. You do not need a Thai Bank account. When we did the Visa in Hanoi, they required bank statements in £'s. we included them in the application. They were actually more interested in seeing our itinerary and which hotels we were going to stay in and what we wanted to see. So move on and find another agency.

Why would a tourist need a Thai bank account. Sounds dodgy
people have a bank account when they plan to stay somewhere, not when they are tourists. Very simply, you are being given wrong information as many have already told you. You don’t need a bank account
doesnt have to be a Thai bank account. A tourist by definition is someone visiting a country not living in it. So the Thai bank account thing is wrong they are bullshitting you. Dont use them they sound dodgy
yes but a tourist wouldn't have a Thai bank account. In fact someone applying for a tourist visa and having a Thai bank account is very suspicious

Rubbish - They want you to use them to get a bank account. OR so you can transfer the Fee for the Service to their bank account. Consider using another Agency and going to Cambodia and get the Visa Exemption 45 +30 (only 15 days less than the TR90, plus only takes one full day to do the Exemption border bounce).
Why are you listening to what an agent is telling you?
Check the consulate website and see what their requirements are, and then you'll have your answer. All of the nearby consulates have a website with what their requirements are
